On doing the show: "I love it. I'm having a ball with it. Working with Randy and Steven is a riot. You never know what's going to happen. You never know what's going to come out of Steven's mouth. It's a lot of fun."
On positive reactions to the 10th season: "I'm glad people are loving the season. We're putting our hearts and souls into it. We take it seriously but we don't take ourselves seriously and we're just having a ball with it."
On relating to the contestants: "When they overcome (the nervousness) and the pressure, the whole thing, I understand and I feel like it's taking the dream with them. That's why when they (perform), I get the most excited and when they have to leave, I feel it, too, because I do identify with every single thing that's happening to them."
On the Idol "mafia": Randy and Steven "are like the brothers I never had. And Ryan and some of the guys behind the scenes, too, (executive producer) Nigel Lythgoe, (creator) Simon Fuller. I feel like for the first time, it's like the Idolmafia. It's like a big, tight team and we all protect each other and we all care about each other and we all want each other to do well. And, like I said, I never had brothers. I only had sisters and I have girl cousins and there's no boys in our family and this is the first time I've had like big brothers and it's awesome."
On making the album, Love?, which comes out in April:"It's very much me, but me today. And I have the producers to thank for that, because I can bring me to the table and what I want to say and what my message is and the things I want to write about or talk about (but) then they have to convert that into the sound and the melody and all those things and they really did that. And I worked with some great ones. I worked with Tricky and The Dream for more of the urban stuff and RedOne for more of the dance stuff, which are both very much aspects of who I am. That, under the big pop heading. And, so, it's trying to put all that in one big bag, shake it up and hope something colorful and gorgeous comes out."
On whether she feels more pressure with her first studio album since 2007: "It doesn't put more pressure on me that I took a little time to have babies. I think what happens is that you realize if you're truly meant to do this, you actually become more powerful when you're able to walk away and come back and go, 'I can still make an album and it be OK.' It empowers you in a different way.
