HOLLYWOOD, CALIF. -- OK, who knew Huntsville’s Paul McDonald and Kid Rock had so much in common?
They both want to be a cowboy, baby.
“I’m heading out West sucker .... because I wanna be a cowboy,” Kid Rock sings.
McDonald, 26, a Huntsville High School graduate, has also headed out West to Hollywood for “American Idol,” but, unlike Kid Rock, he’s not looking for booze and other assorted trouble at Hollywood and Vine.
Instead, he’s a modern-day cowboy looking for fame, fortune and a good time on this season’s “American Idol.” According to his mom, Susan McDonald, Paul was a cute little cowboy growing up, so don’t be surprised if he comes out on stage some night dressed up as a modern-day Roy Rogers.
McDonald sings Wednesday night during Motown night with the other Top 11 “Idol” contestants starting at 7 p.m. on WZDX-TV. After America votes, McDonald will find out Thursday if he remains while another contestant is voted off.
“He used to dress up as this cowboy with a little guitar,” his mother said during last week’s “Idol” show. “He was always the center of attention, always the entertainer.”
“I do remember dressing up in that cowboy outfit running around the house shooting up everybody,” McDonald said. “Maybe I should get one of those adult-sized cowboy outfits and wear it the next time I perform on stage.”
And this is pretty funny, tweeted by “American Idol” Monday: “Quote of the Day, ‘Wake up, Paul.....and take OFF your cowboy boots!!’”
McDonald’s parents got to speak for the first time about their son being on the show because of a confidentiality agreement with Fox. His mom and dad attended last week’s shows and were interviewed by "Idol" producers during a trip to California. They joined their daughter Beth, who had already gone to California to watch some of the “Idol” shows.
“Where does Paul get his talent?” asked his father, David, repeating the question. “That’s what we’ve been asking each other and everybody else the last five years.”
Paul gives the credit to his father, who still occasionally warbles in the shower.
“If I had to take a guess on who would be the one who claimed to give me the talent it would be my dad,” McDonald said. “He says, ‘You know I used to be the lead singer of a band back in seventh grade.’”
Maybe it’s in the genes. McDonald is now lead singer of the Nashville-based Grand Magnolias, and could be headed for a huge career thanks to “American Idol.”
