In the meantime: Here’s Jacob’s post-boot interview with Entertainment Weekly.Watch.
Live blog after the JUMP…
Was the pressure getting to him. No he was getting really tired. He was trying to do different things that he thought Jimmy and America would like. He let it all out on the last performance
He’s sung even higher notes than he did on Idol.
On the comment about looking in the mirror – The comment had nothing to do with his vocal performance, but his song selection and what was going on in the world. It wasn’t about people voting for him. It had to do with people looking at what was going on in the world. “It was sensationalized a bit…a whole lot”
Did the audience “I think that a lot of America got it…that I was the Gospel R&B guy. I didn’t have the greatest perforance Wed. That’s why I was sent home.
Jimmy’s negative comments hurt, but you have to remember that you are doing it for the audience, for america. “It’s about touching people with music…me putting out great music that America loves”
He told Ray that if he was voted off, he wanted to “take the audience to church” He didn’t want any sad faces–no crying.. Time to celebrate.
What has he been through in his lifetime? His dad died when he was 12, he was bullied in school, moved around a lot. He’s been homeless, gone without. There were times when he didn’t think he was going to make it.
You can’t take gospel singing out of a person. He sites, Mariah, Beyonce, Whitney… It’s something that you can’t run from. It’s a soul thing.
On God Bless the Child in Hollywood, “I was tired, drained, scared. He changed one of the lyrics, ‘I need my own’. I didn’t want to go home to my normal life. I wanted mine. I didn’t want to struggle any more. Now I don’t have to worry about that ever again.”
Who would he like to perform with on the finale? “I would love to perform with Whitney, Prince, Chaka, Yolanda Adams. A gig R&B soul singer.”
Is he interested in acting? “Would love to do some theater, Broadway and film. For sure.”
Type of album? “Traditional R&B”
He was expecting to be eliminated, because of the judges feedback and the quality of his performance. He felt the rest were fantastic and singing in their element.
It’s such a close race, anybody could have been sent home.
Education and music helped him to escape poverty in Compton, CA. He did very well in High School.
Contradictory advice from judges? “Yes. Randy told me it was up to me and to be myself.”
Will he try to avoid the Gospel label? He plans to cross over. Many great artists have done it. But he won’t forsake gospel. There is a middle ground.
Has anybody reached out to him from the Gospel world? He has not yet. But he has heard some things through the grapevine. He feels confident about the future.
Did Jimmy Iovine talk to him after the show? Nope. But all is well, he’s not angry. He feels good about his future.
